#1 MORE THAN 99 YEARS OF AGE
Father of Mrs. Samantha Nellis of Naples, Was One of George Washington's Body Guard
Naples, Jan 12. - Mrs. Samantha Stnaton Nellis, of Naples, whjo reached a noteworthy mile stone in a long and useful life on January 5th, in the celebration of her 99th birthday, has had an experience shared by few.

At this advanced age she is still able to read, do fine sewing, enjoy conversation with her friends, attend church services, and help about the house. In short she is as active3 in mind and body as the majority of persons many years younger.

As a member of Astenovgen Chapter, D.A.R., and as one of the few real daughters, she is much interested in and very proud of the honor pertaining to such membership.

Mrs. Nellis has the enviable distinction of a lineage traced back ot the direct paternal line of the Stantons for twenty-four generations, to Bryan, Lord of Stanton Castle, a contemporary of Edward the Confessor in 1048. A.D. The ninth gneeration brings her to Robert Washington, ancester of George Washington.

Her father was Elijah Stanton, one of Washington's body guards, and the family home was at Fairfield, N.Y. where she was born in 1810.. In 1829 she was married to John W. Nellis, and in 1843 they came to Naples, making this their home from that time. Her husband died many years ago, and one son remains of her family of four children, J. Vanen Nellis, with whom she lives. For sixty-three years she lived on the large farm --(torn) from the village, whjich is still (in...torn) the possession of the family.

#2 Age Rests lightly on Woman 103 Years Old [note the spelling of Sumantha rather than the correct Samantha throughout the article]

Mrs. Sumantha Nellis of Naples, N.Y., Does Farm Work Daily, Indoors and Out - is Real D.A.R.

Canandaigua, Jan. 27 - (Special). -- Ontario county has a real Daughter of the American Revoilution, and she has just celebrated her 103d birthday.

She is Mrs. Sumantha Stanton Nellis of Naples. Mrs. Nellis is old in years only, and aside from a slight deafness, her faculties are normal. At the celebration of her 103d birthday, a few days ago, she was the leading spirit of the affair, and remarked that she felt as though she could climb a tree.

Each year for several years past she has received her friends on her birthday anniversary, preparing with her own hands luncheon, and entertaining her guests most delightfully. Last summer, Mrs. Nellis packed 800 bushels of grapes, and engaged in other active work indoors and out, upon the fine farm upon which she resides. She busies herself daily with actual farm duties, is fond of company, attends church, and is no more lost to the busy world about her than she was 50 years ago.

Mrs. Nellis was born at Eaton's Rush, a settlement in the town of Little Falls, this state. She was the youngest of eight girls and three boys born to Elijah Stanton and Lucy Goodell. At the age of 19 she was married to John D. Nellis, and the young couple settled at Belfast, Allegany county, where they resided until 1844, when they went to Naples. Mr. Nellis died 27 years aqgo, and since then the sturdy mother had buried three sons and one daughter, her entire family.

Mrs. Nellis' father, Elijah Stanton, was born at Preston, Conn, in 1754. When a young man he enlisted in the Revolutionary army in which he rendered conspicuous service. He was wounded severely in one of the battles in New Jersey, and as sonn as he was able to walk he was back with his regiment. Soon afterward he was taken prisoner and confined in a filthy prison where they had smallpox. He was later exchanged and served to the end of the war, receiving honorable discharge. For a time he served as one of General Washington's bodyguard.

Mrs. Nellis has been for several years a member of Astenrogan chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, of Little Falls, her distinction as a real daughter having been shared at that time by only eight others in the United States. Mrs. Nellis is very proud of her certificate of membership, which reads as follows:

"This ceritfies that Sumantha Stanton Nellis is a regularly approved member of the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in connections with the Astenrogen chapter, having been admitted by virtue of descent from Elijah Stanton, who with unfailing loyalty, rendered material aid to the cause of American Independence as a soldier during the Revolutionary war."

Mrs. Nellis boasts a sturdy lineage back to the 11th century, tracing her family for 24 generations, to Byron, Lord of Stanton Castle.
