When a young man, he moved to Edremit, Turkey, via Istanbul. He was by trade a maker of clothing and fezes. He raised his own silkworms and make silk cording and binding. Eventually he became know as Georgios Kazazis and dropped the surname of Paspalas. It is not clear if the name originates from the word for the particular type of clothing and hat, the fringe on the costume, or from some form of the greek word for cotton fabric (Xases). He married in Edremit and raised his family there. Three of his children came to the U.S. and used the surname of Kazazis. |
