“Charles (Mallory) grew up in a remarkable household. Born in Waterford on Feburary 24, 1796, he was the eight of the ten children of David Malary and Amy Crocker. His mother, as recalled by her eldest grandson, “was a jovial, jolly woman, quick-witted and fond of fun—never a sick day in her life---never had a headache, and died of old age at the age of 96.” David Malary “was a big, raw-boned, horny-handed man,” who “had a greater share of Faith than most men. He was deeply religious, but not bigoted, and belonged to the Baptist Church.” But his mature sobriety masked a daring youth. When his father had been drafted into the Continental Army, sixteen-year-old David volunteered as his substitute. After six months, he re-enlisted, served three years with Pond’s Company, Meig’s Connecticut Regiment, and saw action in the Sag Harbor and Compo expeditions. In 1779, he “resigned” from the army and shipped out under an assumed name aboard the new London privateer Oliver Cromwell….. Young Malary and the rest of her crew (Oliver Cromwell) were confined to the infamous prison ship Jersey until their exchange in August (1779.) Malary immediately sailed again as a privateersman, was agains captured, confined to the Jersey, and exchanged. He shipped out a third time, but was again taken prisoner after a “battle with a British gunboat.” Malary escaped again, however, in the confusion of General Benedict Arnold’s occupation of new London. He led one of his Hessian guards “to a case of gin, secured his gun while drinking, made him a prisoner, and marched him to the American line and surrendered him.” A fifth cruise as a privateer cut short Malary’s seagoing career when he fell between the ship and its warf and was seriously injured. His resulting disability forced him ashore, where he setted in Waterford as a farmer and butcher.” The Mallorys of Mystic James P Baughman Wesleyan Univesity Press 1972
Here is an old story told by David Mallory's father, Capt Moses Mallory:
“Moses Mallory, the Revolutionary soldier and the father of Mrs. Peter Short, was distinctly remembered by the older children of her family. He sat in a corner by the huge fireplace in the old Milford, Conn., home and delighted his grandchildren with stories of the Revolution, and often of events of which he was an eye-witness. At one period of this service in the army he was ill and was given a furlough. He had to make his way home far north and leading through a tract of country occupied by the British. He found it extremely difficult to obtain food and often suffered the pangs of hunger. One day, when almost famished, he approached a modest home near the edge of the woods in which he was hiding, and entered into conversation with the woman of the house. He did not ask for food, but presently inquired if she ever made stone soup. At her amazed negative, he assured her that she missed much in not knowing how to make a very delicious dish. But the stones must be of a particular kind having parculiar qualities. If he could find some of these rare stones whould she like to have him show her how the soup was prepared? She surely would. He went to the brook, gathered three or four large pebbles, and bringing them back to the house deposited them in a kettle of water, and set it over the fire. After it had boiled a few mintues, he called for salt, and presently for some cornmeal to thicken the soup. The result was a nourishing porridge of which he partook ravenously, and which the woman shared with him without once suspecting the trick.” 1827 Starkweather forwarded by Sharon Metcalf by email 22 Apr 2003
