David Smith Bonner

M, b. circa 1780, d. after 1860
David Smith Bonner was born circa 1780 at Dinwiddie Co., VA..1 He was the son of Frederick Bonner and Elizabeth Smith. He married Elizabeth Reynolds at Champaign Co., OH, on 1 July 1805. After their marriage they settled in Urbana, Ohio.
The Rennolds-Reynolds book indicates in the details of Joseph Reynolds that his daughter May married first James Davidson and second David Smith Bonner. However in the details for Elizabeth Reynolds it indicates that she married David Smith Bonner..2,3,1 David Smith Bonner married Mary Reynolds, daughter of Joseph Reynolds and Sarah Smith. The Rennolds-Reynolds book indicates in the details of Joseph Reynolds that his daughter May married first James Davidson and second David Smith Bonner. However in the details for Elizabeth Reynolds it indicates that she married David Smith Bonner.4,3 David Smith Bonner died after 1860 at Vincennes, Knox Co., IN.1
David Bonner and David S. Bonner appear to have been in Ohio at the same time. One of them came from Pennsylvania and was a Presbyterian. The other came from Virginia and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Since both have entries as David
(b. 1776) or David S. Bonner (b.1780), they are often confused.

The Presbyterian David was born on 15 July 1776. He was the son of John Bonner and Sarah Walker. He married Eleanor "Nelly" Johnson at Mifflin, on 11 September 1798. Their children were: James Taylor, Henry J., Sara, Margaret, and Eleanor Jane. The tombstone in the Greenfield cemetery gives David's wife as Elinor, and the records of the Recorders Office of Highland Co., Ohio 1805-1850 have six entries with Elinor the wife of David.

He was an expert wool carder, cotton spinner, farmer, millwright, and engineer. He moved to Chillicothe, Ohio from Pennsylvania in 1798 and took an active part in the construction of the Ohio canal and public buildings of that date (including the Old State House in Chillicothe). He then moved to Greenfield, Ohio, where he and his wife were among the earlist permanent settlers. David acquired the northeast corner of Washington and Jefferson Streets where he erected a carding mill. He operated the mill until 1822. In 1834 David Bonner was active with a woolen mill and in 1839 constructed a house. He sold property purchased 27 Dec 1813, Greenfield, Highland Co., OH, on 28 August 1839. This David in Ohio was a very principled man and he was very conscientious in enforcing the observance of the Sabbath and many traveling through Chillicothe on the Sabbath were arrested at his insistence. He was an abolitionist and owned a large farm north of Greenfield where slaves were often hidden. He opposed drinking and his signature appears on a petition to the Court on 4 February 1839 asking that a license not be granted to Samuel Wasson for dram drinking. In 1840 he gave up the mill and opened a bookstore. His second wife was Jane Woods at Ross Co., Ohio, on 13 March 1841. They were defendants in a lawsuit at Greenfield, Highland Co., OH, on 14 January 1854. David died on 31 March 1853 at Greenfield, Highland Co., OH. His body was interred at Greenfield, Highland Co., OH, at Old Burying Ground.

The M.E. David S. Bonner was associated with Nathaniel Massie the early Ohio pioneer. This David married Elizabeth Reynolds. A clipping from the Cincinnati Mercury states "1806, Mar 24, married on Tuesday last by the Reverend John Sale, David S. Bonner of Greene Co., to Miss Elizabeth Reynolds". They had Louisa Smith, Sara, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Mary Jane. In 1812 he, lised as from Xenia, served in the military under Captain Robert McClellan. Sometime after 1820 he appears in Vincennes, Indiana Territory "from Virgina". In Vincennes in 1818 David S. purchased the Jean Baptiste Poetevin die Arpin plantation on the Southeast corner of 5th and Main Street and built a large brick cotton mill which was torn down in 1823. Next he erected another brick building about 1831. Hubbard Smith, M.D. in his early history of Vincennes, indicates that David S. Bonner (was) a Virginia financier and cotton mill operator in Vincennes. On 18th April 1828, General William Henry Harrison deeded to David S. Bonner, et al property to be used for the erection of a Methodist Episcopal Church. This Indiana David remained active in Vincennes. He was one of the organizers of the O & M Railroad on the charter granted 14 Feb 1844 by the Indiana General Assembly for the railroad's construction. But, his business was not successful, he went bankrupt. In 1860 he is blind, with no property, living with the Wetzel family in Vincennes.

Yet another name appears in the Walter Daniel Bonner entry in the National Cyclopedia of American Biography. It states that David's wife was Caroline McIlroy. It is the only source with that name and the underlying sources is not noted.
