1 The Stanton book includes this biographical sketch from Appleton's Encyclopaedia of American Biography: "Capt. Oscar Fitzalan Stanton entered the navy as acting mishipman, 20 Dec., 1849. He was graduated by the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1855, promoted to Master, 16 Sept., 1955, and commissioned Lieutenant, 2 April, 1856, served in the streamer
Memphis, on the Paraguay expedition, in 1858-9, on the coast of Africa in the 1859-60, and on the sloop
St. Marys, of the Pacific squadron, from Dec., 1860 till April, 1862. He was commissioned Lieutenant-Commander, 16 July, 1862, commanded the steamer
Tioga in the special West India squadron, in 1862-3, and the steamer
Panola on the Western Gulf blockading squadron, in 1863-64. In 1865 he was on ordnance duty at New York, after which he served at the Naval Academy until May, 1867. Promoted to Commander, 12 Dec., 1867, and had charge of the steamer
Tahoma, of the North Atlantic squadron, and the
Purveyor, on special service, in 1867-9. He commanded the receiving ship at Portsmouth, N.H., in 1871, the steamer
Monocacy, on the Asiatic station, from 1872 to 1874, when he was transferred to the
Yantic. Promoted to Captain, 11 June 1879, and in Nov., 1881, went on duty at the Naval Asylum in Philadelphia, where he was until 1884; then he commanded the flagship Tennessee, of the North Atlantic station. Since 31 Oct., 1885 he has had command of the New London Naval station."
The Stanton book also includes this info on Capt. Stanton's ancestry. "In 1888 Capt. Stanton tried to find his grandfather's ancestral record and from some records discovered he thought his grandfather was Joseph Stanton, b. in 1769. Since then I (Wm. Stanton have found the family of Joseph and proven that supposition erroneous." Capt. Oscar Fitzalan Stanton lived in 1891 at New London, CT.
