Jan Fransse Van Hoesen
M, b. 1614, d. before 30 May 1667
Jan was born in 1614. Where was Jan born? This is an excerpt from "Van Hoose - Van Hooser - Van Huss Family in the United States", compiled by Joyce Lindstrom: "The Duchy of Schleswig was created in 1115 and was a hereditary fief held from the kings of Denmark. The Duchy of Holstein was part of the Holy Roman Empire after 1111. King Christian I of Denmark became the Duke of the German duchies of Schleswig (1460) and Holstein (1474) and were to remain "forever undivided". In 1773 Denmark obtains the whole of Schleswig in exchange for Oldenburg. After a Prussian inspired revolt (1848-51) in Schleswig-Holstein, the First War of Schleswig ends with the status quo. Denmark still controls the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg. In 1864 Denmark adopts the 'November Constitution' which aims to unite Schleswig (but not Holstein) with the Danish Kingdom. This is abreachof the peace treaty of 1851 in which Denmark promised not to separate the two duchies. Due to this, Prussia and Austra declare war (Austro-Prussian War of Seven Weeks War) in 1866 and conquer Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg. As a result of this, Schleswig-Holstein is incorporated as a province of Prussia. In 1920 the northern part of Schleswig is rejoined with Denmark after a referendum.
Jan was born in Husum which lies in the northern Duchy of Shleswig. Husum is now a city in the Schleswig-Holstein area of northern Germany. He was neither Dutch nor was he German. He was a Schleswigan subject to Danish rule. He would have spoken low German, probably with a Fisian or Danish dialect.. He was the son of Francis Van Hoesen. He married Volkie Jurrianse Van Northstrand at Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam, Holland, on 15 May 1639. Dutch Reformed Church.1 Jan died before 30 May 1667.
He had marriage banns published on 30 April 1639.1 He emigrated, in May 1639. Point of origin:.1 Immigrated to the New Amsterdam colony in the Americas. According to Karl Quosig ([email protected]) Jan was the first Van Hosen, of all the Van Hoosers in America as well as some thirty variations of the surname. His middle name is sometimes given as Fransse or Franssen - the suffix "se" or "sen" meaning "son of".
Jan and Volkje met in Husum. Before they got married, they had already made arrangements on 28 March 1639 with Kiliaen Van Renselaer concerning immediate passage to and settlement in colony of Rensselaerswyck (New Amsterdam). The colonists agreed to remain there for four years. This document also stated that their "ship now lies ready", but they didn't set sail until after Jan Franssee and Volkje Juriaens were married. They came to the U.S. with their son Juriaen.
They settled at Fort Orange and Beverwyk now Albany. NY. He was a helper to Jan Barentse Wemp who had charge of Patrool Killiaen Van Rensselaer's farm "ole Vlackte". He was assigned a garden between 1st and 2nd creeks on 1 Apr 1650.
He made several puchases of land, the most important on 5 Jun 1662 being several hundred acres of Claverack land from the Mohican Indians (Patinetepiet and Tatankenaut) including the site of the present city of Hudson and part of Greenport. Long litigation with Patroon Van Rensselaer confirmed the land to him as did Governor Nicoll on 14 May 1667. The 1662 land purchase was for 500 Dutch Guilders.
He was a commissioner for the West India Comany and an early member of the Dutch Reformed Church at Albany and later Lutherans.
A brass candlestick owned by this family was in the posession of Minnie Stanton (Mrs. Frank Lewis).
