[230] He and his wife with sons Gerrett and Francis and their
families and son Albert came to Preble Corners, NY in 1805/6.
[232] When they moved to the town there were only two frame houses,
both on lot 78, one of Elijah Morse and the other Samuel
Trowbridge. The History of Cortland County mentions other Van
Hoesens who relationship hasn't been determined. Matthias VH
came to the village in 1830 and kept a hotel until 1831.
Matthias kept the post office in the hotel in 1831 and in 1861
a new and complete store under the management of E. M. Van
Hoesen was established by Markham and Ferguson. They were
succeeded by E. M. and F. T. Van Hoesen. Matthias was the first
practicing lawyer in the town, although he was never admitted
to the Bar. (There are more details in the History of

Garret and Albert VH had the hotel in 1879
[231] The DAR lieneage of Vernette Ripley Tatum lists his birth as 20
Aug 1710. Her supporting source for this date is not cited.
