He was educated in Norwich, Connecticut and then was a clerk in the store with his father John. In 1854 he began his own business as a merchant. He was in business in Guilford for fifteen years and then moved to Clinton not long after 1869. According to his obituary "He then had a small fortune but no income from business after his return to Clinton. He became a careful and judicious investor. He wrote in remarkably clear and beautiful handwriting andwas a fine and accurate accountant. He was a director of Clinton National Bank and for many years the clerk of the First Ecclesiastical Society of Clinton and he had many trust funds most of which he managed without compensation. By a life of economy he accumulated a small fortune."
