     He or his family may have been flour millers as "paspali" in Greek means fine flour. The family originated on Andros, immigrated to Lesvos and settled in Mytilene. After a serious earthquake in Mytilene, prior to the birth of his daughter Persephone's children, the family relocated to Loutra where they had a produce/variety store. (The earthquake was mentioned by two grandhcildren. Ref: Varkas-Polimou and Varkas-Samiou interviews.).

     Demetrios was born at Loutra, Lesvos, Greece, in 1851.1,2 He was the son of Andonios Paspalas and Maria (Elena?) ??. He married Persephone (Karonia) Kledaras. Demetrios died on 19 January 1922 His death certificate indicates the cause of death was arterio sclerosis. The family story is that he came home from the coffee house and layed down to rest. He died in his sleep. According to Arion Mavrogeorge, on his way to work he slipped on an icy sidewalk and hit his head. He was carried inconscious to his house and the doctor called. The doctor did not arrive until the afternoon and by that time Demetrios has died. At Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH.1,3 His body was interred on 21 January 1922 at Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH, at Pine Grove Cemetery.1,3
     Demetrios immigrated, on 1 April 1911. Destination: at Manchester ,NH.4 Demetrios's occupation: mill operator at Manchester, Hillsboro Co., NH, in 1922.1 He was born in Loutra, married there, and his seven children were born there. In the U.S. his family took the name Varkas. This may refer to the baggy trousers worn by Demetrios (vraka - large breeches). The records in Loutra, Lesbos, Greece refer to them as Paspalas. The U.S. records use Varkas. It is not clear when the name change occurred. According to Michael Varkas and Pelagia Polimou Varkas, the first member of the family to immigrate to the U.S. was Georgios in 1905. (The remaining family moved from Loutra to Mytilene in 1908. REF: Varkas-Polimou.) Then Maria Demetriou and her husband Alexander Aristidies Mavrogeorge went to the U.S. in 1909. Next was Victoria Demetriou and her husband Stavros Pavlides in 1909-1910. Finally the rest of the family came to the U.S. with their parents in 1911. Archilles Varkas and Vasiliki Samiou Varkas indicated the same order of immigration but remembered that there were two immigrations - first George, Maria, and Victoria with their spouses, and then in 1911 the rest of the family. In Manchester Demetrios was a millworker and shoemaker. He first appears in the Manchester City Directory in 1919 as a single man living at 129 Spruce. The 1921-22 Directory lists him and Persephony at 129 Spruce and the 1923 Directory says died 19 Jan. 1922. He was known as a nice, easy-going, lovable man. One genealogical note. According to the Loutra records, he was born in 1851. His death certificate information would put it at 1866. His tombstone says he was born in 1857.

Destination: at Manchester, NH.2 Her burial record indicates born 1854 (1951 minus 97 years old) but her tombstone indicates born 1860. A possibility is that there was an error made in transcribing the handwritten information to the form and that she died at the age of 91 not the age of 97. After her husband's death she lived with her children. In the 1942 Watertown MA City Directory she is listed with her son Achilles at 144 Pleasant in Watertown MA. Her son-in-law, Alexander Mavrogeorge, referred to her as Karonia. One of children, George, indicated on his social security application that her name was Persifony Moraitou. This is the only indication of that name.

     Theodore was born. He was the son of Panayiotis (Peter) Nicholas Keneklis and Mary ??. He married Evthokia ??. He married (Female) Paraskivas. He married Helen ??. Theodore died.
     He resided at Brockton, Plymouth Co., MA, in 1929.1 He resided at Brockton, Plymouth Co., MA, in 1939.1 According to his grandson Ted Keneklis, he was a sea captain and merchant and sailed between Asia Minor and Lesvos in the early 1900's before he came to the U.S. He was the only one of his siblings to emigrate to the U.S.

The Brockton City Directories also list a Harris Keneklis 1911-1915 rooming at 51 Everett and 1916 residing at 25 Beacon. He worked in a pool hall at 60 Lincoln in 1911, at one at 100 Montello in 1912. From 1913-1916 he was a bootblack at 75 1/2 Centre. It is believed that his father was Theodore Keneklis's brother or Nicholas Keneklis's brother. No firm connection has been made.

There are also these unidentified Keneklis entries:
Beatrice, residing at 21 East Main from 1958-1961. In 1969 she is listed as Mrs. Beatrice M. Keneklis.
Mrs. Doris L. Keneklis, residing at 8 Williams Ct. from 1965 to 1967.
