[10629] Rev. William Petway Banks was described as 'an eminent prince
among theministers of the gospel'. He was pastor of the
Dowelltown Circuit(Dowelltown, TN - Methodist Church) for 10
years and DistrictSuperintendent of the Nashville District for
6 years. He traveled by abuggy drawn by a horse. He spent 4
years in Tullahoma College where hemet his wife. History of
DeKalb Co by Will T. Hale - pages 84 & 85 Mr. Banks wrote
of others, but was so modest about his own work thatthis writer
feels it a duty to add: He was fifty-seven years of age in1914
and was a retired minister on account of broken health.
Hisgrandfather, Rev. Joseph Banks, was not only a moving spirit
in theorganizations of DeKalb County, but a great revivalist in
his day; whilehis father, Enoch Banks, was a local deacon and
did some pastoral work oncircuits as a supply. At the age of
twenty-two, after spending four yearsin Tullahoma College, W.
P. Banks entered the Central TennesseeConference of the M. E.
Church and became an itinerant preacher. Heserved as pastor of
circuits sixteen years and as presiding elder of theNashville
District six years. While presiding elder the finances of
hisdistrict increased one hundred per cent, an increase equal
to that of anytwelve years before or after his term of service
for the same territory. For eight years he was secretary of the
annual Conference and twelveyears the editor and publisher of
the Conference minutes. Rev. Enoch H. Banks, mentioned,
for many years kept up monthlyappointments and revivals in the
fall at some of the schoolhousesadjacent to Dowelltown. October
23, 1889 Issue of Liberty Herald - 'Rev. W. P. Banks has
beenappointed by the conference to take charge of the Tullahoma
station.' 1880 DeKalb Co. TN Dist. 5 (Blue Springs) P. 16 143

1910 Census (p 6 ) - DeKalb Co, TN W. P. BANKS CALLED PRINCE
AMONG MINISTERS OF GOSPEL By J. P. Caplinger (name of paper and
date unknown) As I look back across the fleeting years I see
Rev. W. P. Banks, aneminent prince among the ministers of the
gospel. Rev. Banks was pastor of the Dowelltown Circuit for 10
years and DistrictSuperintendent of the Nashville District six
years. Back in those yearsthe roads were inadequate and we had
no cars to travel in and the best oftravel was in a buggy drawn
by a horse. Rev. Banks traveled in a buggy as pastor over the
Dowelltown Charge andover the Nashville District as District
Superintendent putting forthnoble and heroic efforts to build
the church on a spiritual foundationand money was not his goal.
But the goal for which he labored was toinfluence men and women
to turn from satan's downward way and travel thestraight and
narrow way and serve God from whom all blessings flow and
beinterested in things that transcend the realms of time. On
July 6, 1914 when Rev Banks lay on his death bed he looked
toward theshining portals of heaven and spoke his last words
'Glory, Glory' and bidfarewell to this world of strife and
turmoil and laid aside his battlearmer and hung his sword on
the jasper wall and received a crown of glorythat will never
fade or grow dim while eternity rolls her endless ages on. When
Rev. Banks bid farewell to his kindred and friends on earth and
wentto the land of glory, he left his foot print on the sand of
time and hisname on the eternal memory of all who knew him and
his name will remainas long as the lamy of life holds out it's
hand. Rev Banks was one of the most potant factors in Methodism
and is nowreaping a bountiful spiritual harvest in the field of
glory from therighteous seed he sewed while here on earth. Why
should we weep over our loved ones when they leave this world
of sinand strife and go to heaven where they will be dressed in
a robe ofrighteousness and a crown of never fading glory? Rev
Banks sees his friends on earth and know the life they live and
herejoices more over one sinner that repents, than he does over
99 justpersons. Liberty Herald, April 6, 1892 - The first issue
was April 1, 1886. Thepaper began with a stock company
organized in March, with H.L. Hale,Henry C. Fite and Will A.
Vick and a paid up capital of $45. The press, a10x15 hand
inking jobber was rented from Rev. W.P. Ban ks.
