[10616] John Ivan Banks - His home place was at the foot of Snow Hill,
DeKalb Co,TN. He and Berta lived in Dowelltown, TN where they
raised their family.Around the house was located a shop, barn,
chicken houses, and a potatohouse. He was a farmer, carpenter,
and bee keeper. In Will Hale'sHistory of DeKalb County, page
252 - 'J. I. Banks, of Dry Creek, isregarded as one of the best
beekeepers of the State. He makes aspecialty of queens and has
patrons throughout the Union.' Aritcle in Smithville Review
November 9, 1961 In Memoriam by Wayne T. Robinson John Ivan
Banks of Dowelltown is gone and will never return, but he
leftan enviable record for his relatives and friends to
remember, and pointto with pride. He was one of the local boys
who never had to leave hometo find a way to expend his natural
God given talents. Ivan took exceptional pride in being a
scientifically progressive farmer, and he set examples in know
how, that will live on through the years tocome. Most every
other boy born and reared in the same neighborhoodmoved out
into live with the same opportunities as he himself had,
butIvan put all his eggs in one basket, and bent every effort
in thedirection of making a success of scientific farming.
Higher education has its advantages and everything else being
equal, anyone who acquires a finished degree of it, will amount
to more in lifethan otherwise, but there are different ways of
acquiring it. I thinkIvan acquired his through hard work, and
while others slept he read booksand scientific articles that
pointed the way. If he ever had more formal education than what
the rest of us wereexposed to, at Old Eureka Academy, I never
heard of it. It laid afoundation for him and he was naturally
intelligent enough to makeprogress through trial and error.
About a third of us, anyway you lookat it, never amount to
much. Another third who started out well wereunable to adjust
some of their ways of living to changing conditions, andlearn
to accept the realities of life. A smaller percentage have
movedonward and upward. Ivan was outstanding in his ability to
be a usefulcitizen. He was a good Mason, and the Church of his
choice received agenerous amount of his attentions. It is said
that back of every successful business man is the influenceand
inspiration of a naturally intelligent woman. In this respect,
forIvan, it was Bertie Beckwith Banks. She has kept the home
fires burningand a light in the window for him more than fifty
years. May the soiland the sod of Snow's Hill be a place of
rest for his body, as the soulof John Ivan Banks moves on into
the Great Beyond.
