National Bank Building Wellington, Kansas Letter from Ivan D.
Rogers to Lina Caro Rogers Feby 17, 1924 Dear Sister Caro and
family: When I received your Christmas Greetings I intended to
write you a letterat once but did not get at it and almost two
months have passed. Edithupbraids me every once in a while for
not writing to you and really Ifeel very guilty of your neglect
but what is the use of apologizing forthe past. I am now
determined to write you a letter. If I should receive a letter
from you the most interesting part would betelling me of
yourself and family and I assume you will be interested inme
and my family. We are living in same house we have lived since
December 1894. The houseis too large for us now but the
children will not allow us to sell. Theysay it would not seem
like coming home if we were living in any otherhouse. And it
is none too large at Christmas time. Edith and I arequite well
and plodding along as best we can. We cannot do as much in
aday as we used to but we are on the job every day and get a
good dealdone after all. We had our pictures taked a year ago
last Christmas andI intended to send you one and I may have but
I have no recollection ofso doing so will send another and if
you have one you can give this oneto one of the children. I
have a few gray hairs but not very noticeableand I am a
straight as I ever was and weigh just about 150 pounds.
Edithhas more gray than I have but she is not white by any
means and neitherof us use anything on our hair. As to the
children, I will commence with the youngest and go up.
Charlesis 19 years old and is attending Fairmount College in
Wichita. He is afreshman. He has never done good work in
school. Just barely getsthrough. I had hoped he would do
better in college but he is not. Thereis nothing very bad
about him but he does not like to get right down anddig and
does like to have a good time. We hope he will change as he
getsolder. Ethel is senior in Southwestern College located in
Winfield 25 miles eastof us. She is majoring in Home Economics
and has done good work. Sheexpects to teach next year and get
married the next so you see she hasher program well outlined.
Her school will be of use to her as long asshe lives. She is a
good girl and ever so much like hermother indisposition and
ways. She has her bobbed and is some kid. Forrist is in
business with me. He finished school a year ago last Juneand
came home and went to work. Our business has grown rapidly
sincethat time. This letter head is obselete. We have two:
Rogers & Rogers,Lawyers and The Rogers Abstract & Title Co. We
are doing right well andmaking money. Forrist attends to most
of the abstract work and I work atthe law business mostly. I
am Secretary of our Building and LoanAssociation which takes
considerable of my time. We have four girlsworking for us at
this time. Forrist is a very likeable fellow and isliked by
the men he does business with. He has a girl and we
ratherthink he will get married before very many months.
Forrist is activeworker in Church and Sunday School. He is
member finance committee ofthe church and teaches a large class
of boys in Sunday School. Whitson is a full fledged lawyer and
is located in Kansas City, Mo. Heis having what most young
lawyers experience - hard time getting a holdbut Whitson will
win out I am sure. His girl has been working for meseven years
and they expect to get married just as soon as he getsstarted
and can make a living. She is a fine girl and we like her
verymuch. Lena lives in Lawrence. Her husband is quite
successful in his work andis prospering. They have a fine boy
almost three years old, Edwin Jr andwe think him great. She
and the boy was with us almost a month atChristmas time and we
had a great time. Her address is 717 Maine,Lawrence, Kansas.
I know she would be delighted to hear from you orEthel. Edith
and I have been quite active in our church. She has cut
offseveral of her jobs. They got to worrying her and she was
compelled tolet up. I am chairman of our Board of Deacons and
we work at our tasktoo. I am Superintendent of our Sunday
School. The school has grownfrom a little over a 100 to 300 in
the past three years and I assure youit is some task to take
care of a growing school. I don't think of anything else about
us that will be of interest to you. We will be glad tohear
from you and all about your family. It is a shame we don't
knowmore about each other. I was just thinking I have only
seen you threetimes in 45 years. We left Tennessee in 1879.
You visited me in 1893 and I visited you in1900 and it is your
turn to visit me (Edith looked in just now and saidfor me to
tell you that I am not very wrinkled yet. She says you
weresurprised that I was not wrinkled when we were down there
24 years ago.)and we want you to come to see us this spring.
We have been talking itover and it will not be a hard trip for
you. You can take train atNashville in the evening and be in
St Louis in the morning. It is ashort days ride from St. Louis
to Kansas City and Whitsin will meet youthere and go out to
Lawrence with you. It is about 50 miles from KansasCity to
Lawrence and you can visit with Lena a couple of days or more
asyou may desire. It is a days ride from there here and we
will come up tobring you on home with us. Now is that not just
a fine trip. Yourreturn trip will be just as easy. Stop with
Lena for a day or so after adays ride. Another day puts you in
St Louis and a night ride on home. Iwill be delighted to take
care of all expense in everyway - getting readyto come,
railroad sleeper coming and returning and everything.
Aprilwill be a good time to come. Now what do you say? Edith
and I took along trip last summer. We left here first of July,
spent some time inSouthern California. Went up the coast to
Washington. Spent about amonth with George and Lollie Heath.
Came back through Yellowstone Parkreaching home the last day of
August. Some hawks. We shall expect a letter soon saying you
will come to visit us in April. With love to you. Your Brother
Ivan D. Rogers
