[364] Samuel inherited from his grandfather Samuel Rowland his farm
at Stratford and from his father his stone house and bakery, at
the head of Winthrop's (or Mill) Cove, in New London. There he
lived about 15 years. Through his friendship with Ucas, chief
of the Mohegans, and his son Owaneco, Samuel acquired much land
from the indians and a promise of protection from their
warriors. About 1680 he became the first settler in Mohegan,
what is now the town of Montville.
