[8791] Was a Senator in Congress.
[8794] He served as 2nd Lieutenant int he Rhode Island regiment that
was raised for the expedition against Canada in 1759; he was a
member of the General Assembly of Rhode Island from 1768 to
1774, and of the Committee of Safety in 1776. He was a Delegate
to the State Convention that adopted the United States
Constitution in 1790, and was elected a United States Senator,
as a DEmocrat, serving from June 25, 1790, till March 3, 1793.
Hed was again in the Rhode Island House of Representatives, and
was after wards in the United States Congress from Dec. 7, 1801
till March 3, 1807. He died without children, and willed his
property to his nephew Peleg Thompson. In 1776, Capt. Joseph
Stanton, Jr., was made Lieutenanct-Colonel of the 1st Regt, R.
I. Militia, and in 1779 he was promoted to Brigadier-General.
